KS2 Poetry Day. 6th October, 9.30 - 2.30, The Milton Rooms
“The best school’s poetry day I have ever been to” John Hegley, October 2015
We are very excited to announce that the special guest at our 6th Poetry Day will be Mandy Coe, who is a passionate advocate for literacy believing that ‘Poetry for children brings literature to life and into our lives in a way no other genre can.’ Her poems have appeared on BBC television and radio including CBeebies, BBC Schools Radio, Woman’s Hour and Poetry Please. Mandy will be leading a poetry workshop in the morning and she has kindly agreed to join the panel of judges for the P-Factor Grand Final.
Her children’s collection, ‘If You Could See Laughter’ (Salt 2010), won a Highly Commended award in the 2011 CLiPPA Award (Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award) and is a Children’s Poetry Bookshelf selection. Mandy is a visiting Fellow of the Writer’s School, Manchester Metropolitan University where she edited ‘Let in the Stars: new poetry for children’ for which she was shortlisted for the 2015 CLiPPA prize.
After lunch participants will get the chance to experience the Grand Final of the P-Factor. This is an event that can be live-streamed back to your classroom so everyone can cheer their team along.
The P-Factor is an inter-school ‘X-Factor’ style slam poetry competition for KS2 pupils, conceived for Ryedale Book Festival by Blue Peter non-fiction award winner Andy Seed in 2012. The winning team will receive a trophy for their school and all finalists will receive a poetry book prize.

KS2 Author Event with Lauren Child. 22nd September, 1.00 - 2.30, The Milton Rooms
We look forward to welcoming Lauren back to Ryedale to tell us more about Clarice and Ruby – her books for older children. In 2015 she inspired Year 5 and 6 children who had enjoyed reading Ruby Redfort and had lots of questions for her about illustration, writing and creating memorable and mischievous characters.
Now Ruby’s sixth and final adventure is over I am sure people will be keen to find out from Lauren what she is planning for older readers…
EYFS and KS1 Oskar's Amazing Adventure. 22nd September, 10.30 - 11.15, The Milton Rooms
On the morning of Friday 22nd September, we proudly present Theatre Fideri Fidera and their play, Oskar’s Amazing Adventure. This is a tale of a puppy’s search for friendship in the wilderness of the Alps with storytelling, physical theatre, puppetry music, song and even close up magic.
KS2 Author event with David Almond – 10th May
David Almond, the acclaimed author of many award-winning novels for children such as Skellig, Wilderness, and My Name is Mina brought his latest book to Ryedale to the delight of children at Norton CP School, who had just enjoyed reading Skellig in class. The Tale of Angelino Brown has been described as a “charming, profound and very funny” story about a bus driver who discovers an angel in the top pocket of his shirt. David entertained and inspired the children and encouraged them to appreciate that it is sometimes the most ordinary aspects of our lives that make the most fantastic stories.
KS4 Event with Gemma Cairney - 13th March
‘OPEN: A Toolkit for How Magic and Messed Up Life Can Be’ is a colourful guide to life for young adults from TV and radio personality, journalist and teen ambassador Gemma Cairney, who took Ryedale School by storm earlier this year. Full of honest advice about the big, bad and beautiful things that growing up is all about: from mental health to families to first love, and everything in between.
