Award winning young adult writer Melvin Burgess is perhaps best known for his frank and honest novel Junk, which portrays the lives of teenage heroin addicts in Bristol. The book defined Burgess as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary young adult fiction and earned him the Carnegie medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction prize. But Doing It was the book that divided critics with some describing it as “teenage porn” and others praising it as his “brilliant best”.
